MYPLATE.GOV PROGRAM

my plate

St. Francis Area Schools Nutrition Services is promoting healthier eating by endorsing the USDA "My Plate" visual reminder in the cafeterias. At lunchtime, students are offered all five colors or food groups each day. Besides the main entree and daily milk, students will be encouraged to fill half their plates with fruits and vegetables.

Easy ways to build a health plate during the school day:

  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables

  • Eat red, orange and dark-green vegetables, such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes and broccoli in main and side dishes.

  • Eat beans, which are a natural source of fiber and protein.

  • Drink skim or 1% milk

  • They have the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but less fat and calories.

  • Make at least half your grains whole

  • Eat whole grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice and pasta.

  • Vary your protein choices

  • Keep meat and poultry portions small and lean.
