The St. Francis High School girls soccer team is headed back to the state tournament for the second straight year and the third time in program history. The Fighting Saints open play in the Class AA State Tournament Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m. against 3-seed Academy of Holy Angels. The game will be played at Spring Lake Park High School.
The matchup: The Saints, who were ranked No. 10 in Class AA in the Oct. 5 coaches poll, finished the season with a 14-2-3 record. The team posted 10 shutouts during the season and advanced to the state tournament by winning the Section 6AA title. SFHS won the section final in dramatic fashion, as the Saints upended Monticello in a shootout after the game was 1-1 following regulation and overtime. SFHS was also Mississippi 8 Champions. The trip to state is the third in program history after the team made their debut appearance in 2021.
Holy Angels owns a 13-3-3 record and were Section 3AA Champions. The Stars ranked No. 3 in Class AA in the Oct. 5 coaches poll. Holy Angels defeated Hastings 5-1 to win the section. The Stars are making their fifth straight appearance in the Class AA state tournament. The team claimed the championship in 2022 and have placed runner-up in the last two tournaments.
